WORTHINGTON — A western Pennsylvania couple is dead after their car swerved off a snow and ice-covered road and hit a tree.

The Armstrong County Coroner says 73-year-old Verle Barrett, who was driving the car on Friday afternoon, died instantly of blunt force trauma to the head. Barrett's wife, 74-year-old Demona, was pronounced dead in a Pittsburgh hospital later on Friday.

Authorities say Barrett's car swerved over the center line on the slick road about 40 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The car then hit a tree.
