SRU nets record 128 points

SLIPPERY ROCK — Spare the rod, spoil the future.

That was coach Kevin Reynolds' philosophy as he watched his Slippery Rock University men's basketball team roll up a 128-52 victory over Ohio State University-Mansfield Saturday at Morrow Field House.

The 128 points scored and 76-point margin of victory both set school records for SRU (3-0).

The Rock's previous single-game scoring record occurred in a 122-61 victory over Pitt-Johnstown during the 1990-91 season.

"We've got some starters out of the lineup and I don't know how long they're going to be out,"Reynolds said. "We've got a big game coming up Tuesday against Ashland and I have to get the guys I've got used to playing together and playing hard."

Ashland (2-0) is a perennial Division IIbasketball power and defeated The Rock handily last year. It comes to Morrow Field House for a 7 p.m. tip-off Tuesday night.

SRUset its record Saturday minus would-be starters Joseph Vines, Erroll Robinson and Michael Evans Jr. Vines and Robinson have been sidelined with injuries and Evans — averaging 21.5 points per game — had a death in the family.

"We played consistent basketball without those three and I'm excited about that,"Reynolds said.

The Rock dressed only 10 players for Saturday's game.

OSU-Mansfield, a junior college that competes in the Ohio Regional Campus League, is coming off a 6-26 season and is off to an 0-7 start this were freshmen.

The Mavericks were playing their first NCAADivision IIopponent of the year. In other games against four-year schools this season, they dropped decisions of 121-61 to Huntington, 93-37 to Rio Grande, and 93-56 to Wilberforce.

OSU-Mansfield bergan the day allowing an average of 94.4 points per game.

"We usually play NAIAschools when we do play up,"Mavericks coach Bobby Gossom said. "We took this game to give our kids some experience at this level.

"We've got a couple of players who could play Division IIball down the road and this gives them some exposure."

The Rock used a 25-0 run — in a span of less than six minutes — to open up a 57-16 lead with 3:55 left in the first half.

SRUhit the 100-point mark with 8:18 remaining in the game.

Six Rock players scored in double fugures. Maron Brown had 24 points and 13 rebounds , Maurice Douglas 23 points and seven treys. Jamar Scales netted 21 points to pull within 29 of 1,000 for his career.

Denell Stephens had 19 points, Bryen Spriggs 15 and Tommy Kelly — the lone freshman on the team — added 11.

SRUhad a 61-23 edge in rebounds, a 26-5 advantage in assists.

"There's a lot of talent on this team this year,"Butler graduate Jade Burka, who scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds Saturday, said. "I get a few minutes off the bench and I started 17 games last year.

"I was here when Darnell Johnson set the school's single-game assist record last year and now I'm part of this. This year is going to be fun."
