QUAKERTOWN — A coroner said an inflamed heart muscle likely brought on by an intestinal virus is what killed a 14-year-old Quakertown student who collapsed during soccer practice in August.

Shawn Duffy was warming up with the boys team on Aug. 14 when he suddenly got sick and collapsed. He died at a hospital a short time later.

He would have been a freshman at Quakertown High School this year.

Autopsy results were inconclusive right after the death. But Bucks County Coroner Joseph Campbell now said tests have shown Duffy had myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle.

Campbell said the inflammation was probably caused by an intestinal virus the teen had prior to his death.
