BlueSox baseball coming to Butler

The Red Sox are in Boston, the White Sox are in Chicago.

And the BlueSox are in Butler.

The pending arrival of the Butler BlueSox of the newly formed Prospect League, a 12-team collegiate wooden bat circuit, was formally announced at a press conference Monday morning at Pullman Park.

Leo Trich, a former deputy commissioner of the Frontier League, an independent minor league that included the Slippery Rock Sliders two years ago, is the majority owner of the Butler BlueSox.

Minority owners are members of the Butler City Parks, Recreation Grounds and Facility Authority, which owns Pullman Park.

The Prospect League is making its debut season while consolidating with the Central Illinois Collegiate League, a six-team circuit that's existed since 1963 and sent 150 players to the major leagues.

Dr. Chris Hanners, who founded the Frontier League in 1993, is one of the individuals spear-heading efforts to make the Prospect League one of the best of its kind in the country.

"Butler should prove to be a perfect market for a collegiate baseball league team,"Hanners said. "They have an outstanding new facility ... I know Leo will do all that he can to make it a successful project for everyone involved."

Each team will play 27 home games and 27 road games. Play runs from June through August and will include an all-star game and league championship series.

The BlueSox will play in the East Division with Chillicothe (Ohio), Richmond (Indiana), Lorain (Ohio), Slippery Rock and a team yet to be determined.

"Pullman Park, with all its tradition and great memories dating back to the New York Yankees' minor league team, will now have a top quality baseball team playing there again,"said Jack Cohen, Executive Director of Butler County Tourism.

"We also see this as an opportunity to help bring additional visitors to Butler — and that is always good news for area businesses."

Trich is getting assistance from Jason Weurfel — batting coach of the Frontier League's Traverse City (Mich.) franchise and a former collegiate league coach — in attracting players to the team.

The BlueSox will launch a website soon and will establish an office at Pullman Park.
