It's time to work together

This historic election is now concluded and the American people have spoken. They have decided to try a different approach to governing and politics, and have selected the first African-American president in our history to move us in that direction.

This was a hotly contested campaign, and emotions were worn raw. But in the end, there is a mandate for change that focuses on bridging the divide, seeking common ground and being unified in our efforts to become a better nation and people.

We cannot now see ourselves as Democrats or Republicans, but as Americans; not as white or black/Latino/Asian/Arab, but as people of God; not as liberals or conservatives, but as patriots.

Our country faces tremendous challenges that will test our will and our ingenuity. We owe it to ourselves, our forefathers and our future generations to work together to meet those challenges in a bipartisan way that strengthens our own country and builds our reputation in the world.

The leaders in Washington and throughout this country must summon the resolve to shed old partisan beliefs and adopt a consensus for positive change.

Many of us have lived through times we might not want to highlight, when some were denied basic human rights because of their skin color or their gender or their heritage. Now is the time to repent for those times by coming together as one.

It is a time to celebrate our coming of age and looking for ways to work together. Those of us who supported President-elect Barack Obama must not gloat over our victory, and those who supported Sen. John McCain must not feel disappointed in their loss.

We must all feel proud to be Americans, and be unified in our purpose as Americans to become the best we can become.
