HARRISBURG — Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll said Monday that she is strong in spirit and eager to return to work as she battles neuroendocrine cancer.

In a message n her official Web site, Knoll said she does not know when doctors might clear her to return. She also did not say whether she remains in Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore, where she went for intensive treatment in early October.

"My doctors have given me no timetable for my anticipated full recovery, but that doesn't stop me from preparing some calendar targets of my own," she wrote. "Voting on Election Day, Thanksgiving dinner with my family — these are motivating dates for me."

Knoll, 78, was diagnosed with cancer in July and has undergone radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Supreme Court says it was OK for police to temporarily suspend a sobriety checkpoint to relieve traffic congestion without prior authorization.The court ruled Monday that police in Monroeville didn't violate constitutional search and seizure rights when they let some cars go by at three different times to prevent traffic backups in May 2002.The decision overturned an Allegheny County judge and the Superior Court, which had sided with defendant Mark Worthy. Two judges who dissented said administrative guidelines should be established ahead of time to deal with whether or when to suspend or resume a checkpoint.Worthy's lawyer Tim Sheerer says he doesn't think decisions about how to run sobriety checkpoints should be left to field officers.
