Tough day on links

SV's Vogt must settle for 4th at state tourney

YORK — Matt Vogt couldn't trust his club or his swing.

With brutal conditions at Heritage Hills Golf Resort during the final round of the PIAA Golf Championships Tuesday, the Seneca Valley senior hit shots he thought were good, only to see them to end up very, very bad.

One shot in particular cost Vogt dearly.

In a tie with David Denlinger of Lancaster Mennonite heading into the final hole, Vogt hit a tee shot that splashed down in the water.

Vogt had a double bogey on the hole and finished in fourth place, three strokes behind Denlinger.

"In the game of golf, you just never know," said Seneca Valley coach Steve Mayes.

Winds were 20 mph and gusting to 30 and the air was bone chilling.

Vogt entered the day with a one-stroke lead after the first round and started with two pars and a bogey.

Denlinger, though, was hot from the start. He finished the front nine at 2 under par.

Vogt battled back to even with Denlinger after a par on No. 17.

But that's when things went awry.

"I was fine, for the most part," Vogt said. "I just got back to even with (Denlinger), then I blow an easy shot. To do that was tough."

But things were tough for Vogt all day.

He hit a 3-wood on No. 16 right on line, only to watch the wind carry it into a hazard.

"It certainly wasn't good golfing weather," Mayes said.

Vogt also was battling his swing and his nerves.

"Just today was an obvious struggle for me," Vogt said. "Pressure will do crazy things to your golf game."

Vogt has rarely been in the position he was in on Tuesday.

He's been playing competitive golf a little less than three years and Tuesday was one of the few times he led a major tournament in the final round.

"When you are out there with the lead or tied for the lead, it makes you feel like you've never played golf before," Vogt said.

Still, Vogt finished fourth out of a strong field of 48 golfers.

"It was exciting just to be in the hunt," Vogt said. "And it was horrible at the same time. I'm sure it will sink in and it will feel good. I'm sure I will look back and feel satisfied I finished so high. But, right now, it stinks."

Grove City sophomore Ryan Prokay also struggled with the conditions, shooting a second-round score of 84 to finish 32nd at 19-over-par.

On the girls side, Slippery Rock senior Jenna Rinker carded an 82 to finish 17th at 20-over.

Butler freshman Marissa DeCola placed 20th out of the 24 in the field at 22-over.
