Rock rolled by Edinboro
SLIPPERY ROCK — Too much Trevor.
Edinboro junior quarterback Trevor Harris completed 28 of 41 passes for 379 yards and five touchdowns Saturday afternoon as the Fighting Scots defeated Slippery Rock University, 35-14.
The loss was only the fourth in 21 homecoming football games under SRUcoach George Mihalik at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
Harris completed 14 of 17 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns in the second quarter, when Edinboro (7-1, 4-1) broke the game open.
"He got into a groove," Edinboro coach Scott Browning said. "Once he gets his rhythm, he can be pretty effective."
Edinboro scored the first points of the game with 1:07 left in the first quarter. Harris concluded a 72-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Rich Cerro.
Then he rolled up his sleeves and went to work.
A 52-yard drive ended with a 3-yard TD pass to Jeremy Burr. An 84-yard march concluded with a 38-yard touchdown toss to Josh Brown, who beat single coverage down the right sideline.
The 84-yard drive was highlighted by a 20-yard completion to Gary Nolen on third-and-17 from the Edinboro 8-yard line.
"We couldn't do anything to stop their momentum,"Mihalik said. "We needed a stop and we didn't get it. We needed to put points on the board and didn't do that, either."
The coup de grace came in the closing stages of the first half. The Scots took possession at their own 19-yard line with 1:05 left in the half. Harris completed six consecutive passes, the final one a 15-yard TD pass to Ryan Rybicki with 14 seconds remaining.
Edinboro had a 28-0 lead at intermission. Harris completed his final eight passes of the half — seven for more than 10 yards — and connected with eight different receivers in the first two quarters. Four different receivers caught touchdown passes.
"We weren't just on the same page. It felt like we were on the same word,"Harris admitted.
"Their defense was in a cover-3 and he (Harris) kept hitting the seams for us,"Cerro said.
The Scots' late touchdown put The Rock (4-4, 2-3) in a deeper hole, but SRU's first possession of the third quarter resulted in a 72-yasrd drive to paydirt. Brandon Frohnapple found Jermale Cromerdie for a 22-yard score, the receiver breaking three tackles to reach the end zone.
Alas, Edinboro responded witrh a 58-yard scoring drive, capped by Harris' fifth touchdown pass of the day.
"I liked the way we came out to start the third quarter,"Mihalik said. "But our passing game isn't at the point where we're going to come from that far behind."
Brad Galvan played the fourth quarter at QBfor SRU and threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Richardson in the closing seconds.
Rock quarterbacks were sacked seven times, with Edinboro's Mike Perillo getting three of them. Harris was sacked once on Edinboro's first possession, but never again.
"Once they saw a couple of our blitzes, they figured them out and adjusted,"Mihalik said.
"Slippery Rock's line was just beating us early in this game,"Browning said. "We had to relax and play some football."
They did — with Harris leading the way.
"Our receivers, backs and myself have been playing together for three years,"Harris said. "We've worked hard every practice, every summer ... It's paid off."
