FARMINGTON — Jesse Horner of Butler, Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf &Country Club and Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock will be among the honorees at the 18th annual Tri-State Section PGAChampions of Golf Dinner Oct. 16 at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.

Horner is receiving the Merchandiser of the Year award for public golf courses. He is the golf pro at Olde Stonewall Golf Club, but begins his duties as general manager and partner of Oakview Golf Club next month.

Boros is receiving the Bill Strausbaugh Award, while Rinker, 14, is one of the Tri-State PGAJunior Players of the Year.

DETROIT — The Tampa Bay Rays won their first AL East title Friday when the Boston Red Sox lost to the New York Yankees. The Rays lost 6-4 to the Detroit Tigers earlier and had to sit through the rain-delayed Boston loss before celebrating their championship.Manager Joe Maddon and a few of the players remained in the clubhouse at Comerica Park to watch the Red Sox game. Others watched it at Detroit's MGM Grand and back at the team hotel.Tampa Bay, which had never won more than 70 games in a season, became the first team other than Boston and New York to win the division since Baltimore did it in 1997.The Rays also became the first AL team in the divisional era to finish with the worst record in its league then win its division in the following year, according to Stats, LLC. Atlanta in 1991 and the Chicago Cubs in 2007 also accomplished the feat.

SEATTLE — Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki matched Lou Gehrig's record with his eighth season of at least 200 hits and 100 runs.Suzuki scored his 100th run of the season Friday in the third inning against Oakland on Raul Ibanez's RBI single. Suzuki, who has 209 hits, achieved the 200-hit, 100-run mark for the eighth consecutive season.Gehrig is the only other player in baseball history to have eight seasons reaching those benchmarks. Gehrig reached the marks in 1927-28, 1930-32, 1934 and 1936-37.

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans will play their home opener against Indianapolis Oct. 5 in hurricane-damaged Reliant Stadium with the roof open.The stadium's retractable roof lost five pieces in the storm and officials said large pieces of debris had fallen into the stadium during Hurricane Ike. The roof won't be fixed in time for the game, but experts said it is structurally sound to host the game with the roof open.

NEW YORK — Petr Nedved's bid to come back to the NHL after a year playing in Europe ended when the New York Rangers released the 36-year-old forward from his tryout.The former Pittsburgh Penguin tied for the team lead with two goals and three points in three preseason games this week, but was let go Friday, one day before the Rangers were to face New Jersey in their final exhibition contest in North America.
