STATE COLLEGE — Penn State University trustees are asking for a 6.9 percent increase in funding from the state Legislature for the 2009 fiscal year.

The measure approved by trustees at a meeting Friday amounts to a total appropriation request of $377 million, or about $24 million more than the amount the university currently receives from the state.

Penn State estimates the tuition rate increase for next year would be about 5 percent.
