County girls net victories

They shine at Fox Chapel tennis event

FOX CHAPEL — They call it the Wimbledon of Pittsburgh, and two Butler County players are among its latest champions.

Elise Held, a 16-year-old who lives near Saxonburg, won the girls 18-and-under division of the Fox Chapel Tennis Tournament last month.

Lindsey Miller, 10, from Cranberry Township, won the girls 10-and-under competition.

Both train at Lakevue Athletic Club in Valencia.

Held, a high school junior, is the number one singles player at Vincentian Academy. She competed in eight tournaments this summer, and, along with her win at Fox Chapel, won two doubles tournaments as well.

"I played in some really big tournaments this year," said Held, naming events in Virginia Beach, Va., and St. Louis among them. "I had never won the Fox Chapel Tournament. But if I wouldn't have won this year, I definitely would be disappointed."

Held's division consisted of 32 players and she was the No. 1 seed.

Her opponent in the finals was Chelsie Yacks. The two have been friends for several years.

"We became friends through different tennis tournaments we played in," Held said.

But Held made quick work of Yacks, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Held's doubles victories came in Erie and Mount Lebanon. Her partner, Brandon Anandan, is a former star tennis player for Knoch High.

Held has been playing competitive tennis since she was 12. She continues to fine tune her game and currently is 19th in the U.S. Tennis Association's Middle States Region rankings in her age division.

"The strongest parts of my game are my forehand and serves," said Held. "But I've been working on my backhand and it's getting better. It's becoming something I can depend on.

"I love the competitive nature of the sport," Held added. "I can't get enough of it."

Miller won the first two rounds of her age division before running into the top seed Laurel Shymanski in the semifinals.

After dropping the first set 6-1, Miller rebounded to take the next two 7-5 and 10-8.

"The semifinal match was pretty tough," said Miller, who won the Treesdale Tournament in 2007 at age 9 while competiting in the 10-to-12 age bracket. "The whole tournament had pretty tough competition."

In the finals, Miller defeated Madelyn Coulson 7-5, 6-3.

"When I won, I was so excited," Miller said. "I was happy because I'd been working hard for it since March."

Miller, who takes lessons at Lakevue from Krishnan Anandan, also plays basketball and has swum competitively in the past.

"Tennis is my favorite sport," she said. "I love the sport and I love the competition."

Butler High's Matt Slamecka lost in the boys 18-and-under final to Fox Chapel's Brad Portnoy 6-3, 3-6, 7-10.
