INDIANA — Two university students completed a 4,600-mile bicycle trek from Western Pennsylvania to Alaska aimed at raising awareness about cancer.
Twenty-year-old Daniel Esten and 23-year-old Michael Frederick, both students at Indiana (Pa.) University, completed their journey in 79 days. They began their journey on May 28 and reached Anchorage, Alaska, on Aug. 14. They biked between 70 and 80 miles each day.
On Tuesday, they returned to Indiana, a town about 60 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
Esten and Frederick have both had relatives impacted by cancer. They thought their trek could help raise awareness for the American Cancer Society.
ERIE — The Erie Zoo is hunting for a male polar bear to live with its now lonely female, Patches, who was recently left alone after the unexpected death of her exhibit mate, Mizar.Zoo President Scott Mitchell said officials are already in contact with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and their interest in getting a male polar bear is known. However, Mitchell pointed out the zoo waited a year to get Patches after Mizar was left alone when his brother, Alcor, died in August 2006.The 9-year-old Mizar died unexpectedly earlier this month when an intestinal aneurysm ruptured. There are fewer than 100 polar bears in captivity in the United States.
