Kerosene company probes Amish death

Recall cites faulty valve mixed fuels

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh-area kerosene company recalling its product for fear it could explode is probing whether the death in June of an Amish woman could have been tied to the faulty fuel.

Pittsburgh Terminals of Coraopolis issued the widespread recall late Wednesday.

Two Butler County area sites are serving as collection sites to return the kerosene.

Heath Oil on Route 8 in Barkeyville is accepting the recalled kerosene. Anyone dropping off the fluid should first call Heath at 814-437-7802.

PPC Lubricants in Butler will be a collection center, but the first day it will accept kerosene has not yet been set.

Before dropping off any kerosene at PPC, call 724-282-3900 to verify if the collection started.

Pittsburgh Terminals spokesman John Arnold said tests found the kerosene was mixed with gasoline, a problem caused by a malfunctioning valve at a storage facility.

Pittsburgh Terminals spokeswoman Karen Walsh said the June death of 25-year-old Ada Kurtz is being investigated. Kurtz died of burns caused when she bent to light a heater, which exploded.

Firefighters believe Kurtz thought she was lighting kerosene, but it actually was gasoline.

On Thursday, the company called on the public to tell the Amish of the recall since they have little access to television and radio.
