Identity crisis at the track

Flinner climbs into Bachman's car — and wins

BUFFALO TWP — No, that wasn't Todd Bachman.

It was John Flinner in Bachman's car.

Flinner, of Zelienople, is in need of a new motor for his No. 48 Late Model.

Bachman is currently on vacation in South Carolina and Flinner drove the former's No. 66 car right into victory lane Friday at Lernerville Speedway.

"That was a lot of fun," Flinner said after his second feature win of the season. "I think I'll change my name to Todd Bachman."

But the win didn't come easy.

Flinner led the first nine laps of the 25-lap feature before John Mollick moved into first for 11 of the next 15 laps.

Mollick went into turn four on the final lap with the lead, but Flinner overtook him on the outside, literally yards from the checkered flag.

Officially, Flinner's victory came by .105 seconds.

"(Mollick) is a real clean driver," said Flinner. "He could've slid over just a bit to cut me off, but he didn't. He gave me enough room. But I know he wanted to win just as bad as I did."

Flinner briefly dropped to third on the 18th lap, but rebounded to take the lead on lap No. 21.

Mollick took control on the 23rd lap before being nipped at the end by the veteran driver.

Most of the drivers found turn two particularly troublesome, and Flinner was no different.

"We were talking about it before I went out," he said. "But I didn't think it was as slippery as it was."

Bachman's car wasn't a perfect fit for Flinner.

"The steering wheel was too far away from me," he said. "And the breaks were adjusted differently. But I don't care if I'd been driving a Pure Stock. Winning is winning. I told Todd I was coming here to win."

Flinner hopes to have his car back at Lernerville soon.

"I still don't have my stuff together yet," he said. "It's been up and down."

• Kittanning's Rod George won the 25-lap Sprint feature by just .178 seconds ahead of Rimersburg's Scott Priester.

Bob Felmlee, who led the points standings entering Friday's action, was taken to the hospital after his car caught fire following a collision during a heat race.

Felmlee was seen walking shortly after the incident, but was treated for burns on his neck.

• Though he did not win his heat race, Jeremiah Shingledecker led all 25 laps of the Modified feature.

Mars' Tom Winkle moved into second place for three straight laps late in the race, but settled for third.

• Bob Lipinski moved in front of Bob Egley on the 20th and final lap to win the Street Stock feature.

Lipinski had led the race early, but Egley paced the field for 11 straight laps (9-19) before placing second.

Notes: There were 93 cars in the pits, with a high of 27 Late Models and a low of 17 Modifieds. ... School Bus Races will be featured at Lernerville Tuesday night, along with the 100 Lap Enduro event. ... Fab Four Racing returns next Friday.
