Young Mars boy cards ace at 12
MARS — Many golfers wait years for their first hole in one.
And most never score an ace.
But Joel Glomb already has one at age 12.
The Mars resident was golfing with his father John Saturday at Rittswood Golf Course in Middlesex Township.
On the course's 146-yard par-3 No. 13 hole, the younger Glomb used a 5-iron and the ball ended up in the cup.
"The guys behind us said it went in, But we weren't sure," said Joel. "When I finally realized that it was a hole-in-one, I was just so excited. It was outstanding.
"My dad's been golfing for over 30 years and he's never gotten a hole-in-one," Joel added.
"I've come close before, within a few inches," the elder Glomb said. "And I had never witnessed one, either, before this."
But Joel Glomb wasn't through.
Two holes later, on the 144-yard No. 15, his 5-iron almost stroked another ace.
"It bounced on the green and right past the hole," John Glomb said of his son's drive. "It ended up on the back of the green."
"Everybody was joking that I was going to get another one," said Joel. "And it looked good for a while."
Joel ended the back nine with a score of 52.
"He recently shot a 51 at Suncrest (Golf Course)," the elder Glomb said. "He got a set of golf clubs last year and chipped around a little bit, but this is the first summer he actually got onto a golf course.
"He's probably been out about 15 times this summer, about once or twice every week," he added. "But this was his first time at Rittswood."
Joel went to a golf camp at Diamond Run Golf Club in Sewickley earlier this summer and it's definitely paid off.
"On No. 16 Saturday, Joel drove the ball to within 60 yards of the hole," John said. "And the yardage on that one is 334 yards. That's pretty good for a 12-year old.
"Sometimes, these kids get a good swing going and they hit it smooth and straight," he added.
"Par-3s, that's my game," Joel said. "I'd really like to get another hole-in-one."
With as much as he's golfing, don't be surprised if he does.
