PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins will break ground on their new $290 million arena Aug 14.
Gov. Ed Rendell will be among the dignitaries in attendance.
The new arena will be built across the street from 47-year-old Mellon Arena, the oldest and one of the smallest arenas in the NHL.
The Penguins hope the arena will be complete by the start of the 2010-2011 season.
The owner of the city's planned slot machine casino is expected to contribute $7.5 million a year for 30 years toward the cost of the arena.
SEWICKLEY — Rob McClellan of Butler Country Club and Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf and Country Club each fired a two-round score of 146 to finish in a four-way tie for fourth place at the Sewickley Heights Open at Sewickley Heights Golf Club Tuesday.Barry Evans of Berry Hills Country Club carded rounds of 73 and 69 to finish with a 142, two strokes ahead of runner-up Greg Berner of Edgewood Country Club.John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred placed tied for fifth in the senior event, finishing with a score of 153.
HONG KONG — Two dozen horses due to arrive in Hong Kong by plane today for the Olympic equestrian competition have been delayed by a severe tropical storm.Equestrian event spokesman Mark Pinkstone said he didn't expect the bad weather to affect the competition, which starts Saturday.Pinkstone said the 24 horses from the U.S., China, the United Arab Emirates, Australia and Saudi Arabia were on two flights from Amsterdam.Severe tropical storm Kammuri brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to the territory, shutting offices, courts and financial markets. The storm's expected to be well west of Hong Kong by Thursday morning, according to a Hong Kong Observatory forecast.
FARMINGTON — Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock carded a 75 to capture the boys 13-to-15 age division in the King's Restaurant Junior Golf Tournament Player of the Year Championship at Nemacolin Woodlands Monday.Rinker won by two strokes over Garrett Browning.
