Golfer's special delivery
PENN TWP — You'll have to forgive Rob McClellan if his days and nights are running together.
With a newborn at home, sleep can be hard to come by. But it hasn't effected his golfing skills, especially when his wife, Kim, gave birth following the second day of the $184,000 Falling Rock Classic July 28 at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington.
McClellan, the Butler Country Club professional, fired a 69 in the pro-am that Sunday. Then, with two rounds slated for that Monday, McClellan was in the middle of the first round when he received a call that Kim was headed to the hospital.
"She had a doctor's appointment at 11 a.m. and they sent her straight to the hospital," said McClellan.
"I talked to her and said I could make it by 7:30 p.m. She said she'd have him by 4 or 5 p.m., but she said she waited for me,"McClellan added.
Levi James McClellan, the couple's second child, was born that evening with McClellan still facing one more round the next day.
McClellan, 28, finished Monday with rounds of 69 and 73, closing with a par of birdies, to put him five shots behind leader Barry Evans of Berry Hills Country Club.
Without much sleep, McClellan returned to Farmington for the final round, but knew coming out of the gate fast could help sustain him.
It didn't work out that way.
"I just wanted to play a good round," said McClellan. "If I could finish in the top five, that would be a good round. I wanted to get off to a good start.
"Barry birdied the first hole, then I bogeyed the second hole and I was down seven after two. I didn't hit the ball great, but all week I had hit the ball steady. I was asked when did I start playing for second. I never thought of it that way, but it was kind of funny,"McClellan added.
McClellan finished in a second-place tie with Gordon Vietmeier of The Club at Nevillewood, each finishing with a 283, six shots behind Evans.
Both golfers pocketed more than $16,000 each while Evans took the top prize of $30,000.
"It took my mind off playing, really," said McClellan. "I was not grinding like another event. Everything I did was not relying on one shot."
Evans has reeled off four consecutive Tri-State PGA Section victories — the West Virginia Open, Stonewall Resort Classic, Falling Rock and Sewickley Heights Open, which wrapped up Tuesday.
Evans fired a two-round total of 141. McClellan finished in a four-way tie for fourth place with a 146 at Sewickley Heights.
"Honestly, this is the busiest half of the summer with all the tournaments," said McClellan. "I took last Wednesday off because we were still at the hospital."
From there, McClellan was at an invitational Thursday through Saturday, then had a practice round at Sewickley Sunday before playing in the two-day event at Sewickley Heights.
"It's been a pretty busy week,"McClellan noted. "And it will stay that way for a little while longer.
"Every week you're playing in a tournament, so you're getting to play instead of a tournament every other week," said McClellan.
"I'm leaving Saturday for the state tournament (Robert L. Fryer Memorial Open) at the Old York Road Country Club in Philadelphia."
No matter how the rest of the season plays out, the weekend of Falling Rock definitely will be a memorable one for the McClellan family.
And it helps to have a great support system at home.
"Everything worked out with (Kim)," said McClellan. "She's been very supportive. She knows what we're playing for. A lot of wives might have said, 'Don't play. Come on home.' She's been great."
