Lynch wins as Sprint points race heats up
BUFFALO TWP — The racing season has kicked into gear for Ed Lynch Jr.
A shootout for the Sprint points championship at Lernerville Speedway has kicked into gear as well.
Lynch put together an impressive run in the feature Friday night. He started in the 12th position and pulled into second by the 14th lap before reaching the checkered flag a full straightaway ahead of runner-up Bob Felmlee.
"Ed was just better than me. That's all there is to it,"points leader Felmlee said. "I wasn't getting the bite in the middle of the track that he was."
Lynch's win was his fifth of the season at the Sarver track and the 93rd Sprint feature triumph of his career here. It was also his fourth victory in the past six weeks at Lernerville.
The Apollo driver of the No. 2Lwill be competing at the Knoxville Nationals in Tennessee next weekend.
"It's all about feeling comfortable in the car at this point,"Lynch said. "It's all about feel. I want to be able to hit the back straightaway at Knoxville, know what I want to do with the car and have the confidence to do it."
Lynch was third in Friday's feature by the 10th lap, using strong pushes out of Turn 4 to gain ground on the entire field.
Felmlee began the night with a three-point lead over Kittanning's Kevin Schaeffer in the Sprint points race. He widened that margin by only a point after the heats and feature.
Schaeffer finished one spot ahead of Felmlee in the heat, but Felmlee finished second and Schaeffer was third in the feature.
Felmlee began the feature in the first row. Schaeffer started ninth.
"Yeah, I'm happy with the jump,"Schaeffer said. "We've been going forward a few spots every week. I thought we might have a chance to win tonight, but it didn't work out."
Felmlee said racing for points contains too many variables from week to week.
"You're looking at pill draws, who you're out there with in the heats — who knows what's going to happen?"he said.
In other features:
n Jared Miley of South Park started the Late Model feature 12th, but he claimed his third win of the season at Lernerville. The victory was his first at the Sarver track since June 20.
Miley grabbed the lead from Sam Stile on the 16th lap after being in fifth during a restart only a lap earlier.
"I had the best car between turns 3 and 4,"Miley said. "That's where I was able to get the momentum to get the lead."
Ken Schaltenbrand led the first 13 laps of the feature before his right rear tire blew, giving the lead to Stile.
• Kevin Bolland of New Brighton started the Modified feature fourth, grabbed the lead from pole-sitter Tim Doran on the second lap and cruised to his fourth feature win of the year.
Bolland has 41 career Modified wins at Lernerville.
"We were trying some different things the past couple of weeks that didn't work, so we went back to what we know,"Bolland said. "We're chasing Brian (Swartzlander) for some points. We're chasing the points title just like he is."
Del Rougeux Jr. finished second while points leader Swartzlander — seeking a third straight win at Lernerville — started 12th and finished third.
• Former regular Street Stocks driver Chris Schneider drove Jim Fosnaught's No. 20 car to victory lane.
Schneider began the race from the eighth spot and took the lead by the fifth lap.
