FARMINGTON— Six area golfers rank among the top 10 in points in their respective age groups and have qualified for the Kings Restaurants Junior Player of the Year Championship Monday at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.
Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock leads the boys 14-year-old division with 305 points. Marissa DeCola of Butler is fifth with 170 points in the girls 14-to-15 division.
Dexter Boots of Fombell is eighth with 106 points in boys 17-to-18, Jason Fitzpatrick of Valencia and Michael McNulty of Harmony are eighth and ninth with 114 and 106 points, respectively, in boys 15-to-16.
Jenna Rinker of Slippery Rock is 10th with 83 points in girls 16-to-18.
SAXONBURG— Saxonburg Ron Gross Trucking won the final two games of a best-of-three championship series recently to capture the Butler Mid-County Pony Baseball title.Freeport won the first game, 3-1, before Ron Gross Trucking won by scores of 8-4 and 8-5.Players on the winning squad include Colton Augustine, Hunter Balliet, Michael Carns, Stefan Carlsson, Joe Colonello, Christian Ebig, Andy Fritz, Mac Megahan, Zack Naples, Ben Pfeiffer, Nate Sarnese, Alex Strezeski and Austin Wolford.Sam Naples managed the team. Coaches included Jim Pfeiffer, Tim Megahan, Jack Wolford, Pat Sarnese and Paris Strezeski.
RENO, Nev. — Michelle Wie failed in her eighth attempt to make the cut on the PGA Tour, shooting a second-round 80 at the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open Friday. Parker McLachlin tied the course record with a 62 to take a four-stroke lead.Wie was 1-over-par 73 Thursday as she attempted to become the first woman since Mildred "Babe" Zaharias played at the 1945 Tucson Open to make the cut on the PGA Tour. But a quintuple-bogey 9 Friday helped push her to 9-over 153 at the par-72 Montreux Golf & Country Club.
