2 WVU hoops players arrested at Pirates game

Men face underage drinking charges

PITTSBURGH — Two West Virginia University basketball players were accused of scuffling with police and with underage drinking after an altercation at a Pittsburgh Pirates game.

Joe Mazzulla and Cameron Thoroughman, both 20, were arrested Monday at PNC Park, where the Pirates were playing the Colorado Rockies.

An argument between police and Mazzulla and Thoroughman began when the two players refused a request for identification, according to a criminal complaint. The officers said the two smelled of alcohol.

Thoroughman, a 6-foot-7 sophomore-to-be from Portsmouth, Ohio, told police he did not have ID, according to the police report. Police said he repeatedly lied about his age and threatened a security guard.

Police wrestled Thoroughman to the ground when he refused to put his arms behind his back, the report said.

While Thoroughman was struggling with the officer, Mazzulla, a 6-foot-2 rising junior guard from Johnston, R.I., tried to grab his teammate and punched a Pittsburgh police sergeant, police said.

Mazzulla was charged with aggravated assault, hindering apprehension and underage drinking. Thoroughman was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and underage drinking.

The two were in custody and awaiting arraignment Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

"We are aware of the situation. We will let the judicial process take its course and the matter will be handled internally," West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins said in a statement.

Mazzulla came off the bench in all 37 of West Virginia's games last season. Thoroughman appeared in 16 games, averaging 1.3 rebounds per game.
