Veteran drivers grab wins

BUFFALO TWP— Ed Lynch Jr. and Brian Swartzlander keep climbing the charts.

Lynch started up front in the Sprint feature Friday night at Lernerville Speedway, grabbed the lead from pole-sitter Gary Rankin on the second lap and cruised to victory from there.

The win marked Lynch's fourth of the season and 92nd of his career at the Sarver track.

"I definitely want to get to 100, though I doubt it's going to happen this year,"Lynch said. "Still, it's a milestone I want to reach in my career."

Lynch pocketed an extra $1,000 as he was the Eracers Bonus Bucks driver for the night.

"Alittle extra pressure there," he said, smiling. "But starting up front, I really wanted to get that done. In these economic times, you can't miss opportunities like that."

Swartzlander saw an opportunity he didn't want to miss as well.

The Leechburg driver of the No. 83 Modified began the 30-lap Joe Pitkavish Memorial from the 11th spot, pulled into second behind pole-sitter Tom Winkle of Mars by the seventh lap and took the lead for good on the ninth lap.

When the checkered flag waved for Swartzlander, he had a full straightaway lead over runner-up Jeremiah Shingledecker. Winkle finished fourth.

"I've got the best pit crew in the business and the way they have this car set up right now, as long as I keep it out of trouble, we have a chance to win every night,"Swartzlander said.

Friday's victory marked his sixth of the season at Lernerville and 60th of his career at the Sarver track. Swartzlander trails Modified career wins leader Lou Blaney by nine.

While the Pitkavish Memorial carries prestige in itself, Swartzlander wanted to win for others on this night.

"My (late) father would have turned 67 today and I have a friend at the track tonight who has cancer," he said. "I really wanted to win for them. I'm happy she gets that trophy tonight."

Winkle is still looking for his first feature win of the season. Friday marked his sixth top-five finish.

In the Sprint feature, Brian Ellenberger of Butler finished second and Kittanning's Kevin Schaeffer third. They started sixth and 12th, respectively.

Ellenberger sat in third place for a long time, chasing Lynch and Sprint points leader Bob Felmlee.

Schaeffer was happy to pull into third.

"I broke the rear end of the car during hot laps and we had to scramble to put it back together,"Schaeffer said. "I was just holding on during the heat race."

In other features:

n Alex Ferree of Saxonburg won his second straight Late Model feature and third of the season, taking the lead from Chuck Kennedy on the ninth lap and holding off Dave Murdick for the checkered.

"It's getting back in swing for me,"the defending points champion said of his racing. "I just wish we could get done a little quicker."

The Late Model feature had 10 restarts, marking the fourth straight week of double-digits in that category.

Ferree's win was his 14th career Late Model triumph at Lernerville, ninth on the track's all-time list.

n Wayne Carbo of Saxonburg started third, took the lead from Bryan Shaffer on the third lap and maintained it for his first Street Stock feature win of the year.

Carbo had finished among the top five seven times before finally reaching victory lane.
