State revenue officials say Pennsylvania Lottery sales rose by just a fraction of a percentage point in the 2007-08 fiscal year.
But the Revenue Department also says the latest figure sets a new sales record. Lottery sales totaled $3.089 billion in 2007-08, compared to $3.076 billion in the previous year.
Revenue Secretary Tom Wolf says officials were expecting an overall drop in ticket sales, but sales rebounded in the second half of the fiscal year that ended June 30.
Instant game sales accounted for more than half of all lottery ticket sales.
The lottery pays for a variety of programs for senior citizens, including prescription-drug discounts, senior centers, nursing home care, and property tax and rent rebates.
Pennsylvania State Police say one person has died and seven others were injured in a 10-vehicle highway accident south of Harrisburg.Trooper Karl Schmidhamer says the pileup occurred just after 7 a.m. Monday on Interstate 83 in New Cumberland.The Cumberland County Coroner's Office says 54-year-old Nancy Zarker of Etters died in the crash.Schmidhamer says a northbound tractor-trailer struck several slow-moving vehicles as it was coming up a hill, and some of them hit other cars and trucks. He says no charges have been filed.Police say seven other people with mild to moderate injuries were taken to hospitals.
