Let's do it again
If at first you succeed, do it again.
That appears to be the case for Brian Minto and Pullman Park, as negotiations are on for a second professional boxing card at the renovated ballpark.
Minto (31-2, 20 KOs), who knocked out John Poore in the first round of their WBA Fedecentro heavyweight title fight July 2 in front of 4,000 fans at Pullman, wants to put on another show there at 3 p.m. Aug. 23.
"The timing would be good," the Butler fighter said. "It's a day after Butler's first football scrimmage, a few days before their first game. ... We don't want to go up against Butler football."
While the show is merely in the speculative and planning stages right now, a deal with the city's redevelopment authority could be hammered out as soon as Friday.
"Get the deal done Friday, have a TV network in place by Monday, have Brian's opponent named by next Friday — that's what we're looking at,"said Pat Nelson, Minto's manager.
The card would feature six fights, with Butler boxers Jim Emrick and Dave Cook appearing on the undercard as they did July 2. Butler's Ryan Covert might be part of the show as well.
Covert said he would not fight again after knocking out Billy Greenawalt in the third round July 2, but Minto has asked him to fight on the card.
"We're hoping he does it," Nelson said. "We need him to help make this work."
As he did with the July 2 event, Minto will provide most of the funding.
"Everything's pretty much set on our end," he said. "Because of the turnout and success we had (July 2), I'm a lot more comfortable with it."
Nelson said the undercard was "practically in place"and discussions have begun with FSN, ESPNand CBSaffiliates in Pittsburgh and Youngstown to televise the show.
Minto has ended his last four fights in the first round. He is now ranked No. 10 in the world by the World Boxing Organization.
"There are no big fights out there for me right now and I want to stay busy,"Minto said. "If I keep fighting and keep winning, I'll keep moving up in the rankings.
"If you keep knocking on the door, sooner or later, someone's got to answer."
Numerous opponents are being considered for Minto, though he and Nelson refused to give any names at this point.
Minto said one of the opponents under consideration is 17-0, while others are 30-6 and 24-4, respectively.
"It's not going to be a walkover,"he insisted.
Nelson said Minto's opponent likely would have more than 20 career victories and fewer than 10 defeats. Minto's newly acquired Pennsylvania heavyweight title will be on the line if the opponent is from the Keystone State.
"I'm confident everything would work out again," Minto said of fighting at Pullman Park. "All of the seats will be numbered this time, so there will be no confusion that way.
"There won't be any standing room this time. We want to make sure people get what they pay for."
Though the show is not yet official, Nelson said fans or businesses can call Minto at 724-504-6708 to buy tables of 10 at ringside for $1,000 (first two rows) or $500.
Those buying $1,000 tables will receive an encased boxing glove autographed by Minto. Those buying $500 tables will receive an autographed picture of Minto.
"We didn't do that last time. Brian wants to show his appreciation for the support he's received,"Nelson said.
The July 2 show sold out less than two weeks after tickets went on sale. The ringside tables sold out in two days.
