Kinser shows he's still The King by taking Silver Cup
BUFFALO TWP — Long live The King.
Known nationwide as The King of the Outlaws, Steve Kinser started on the pole and led throughout in winning the 40-lap Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Sprint car race Tuesday night at Lernerville Speedway.
The win was the 546th of Kinser's career and the $40,000 prize was well-earned. He beat back the top three in the current World of Outlaws point standings to take the checkered flag.
"I'm not going to hang my head,"Outlaws points leader and Silver Cup runner-up Donny Schatz said.
"I didn't lose to a lapped car. I lost to this guy, he added while pointing to Kinser."
Schatz has 10 Outlaws feature wins on the season and started fifth Tuesday. He was running fourth, but pulled into third when Craig Dollansky stalled on the back straightaway on the 33rd lap. Dollansky is third in the Outlaws points chase.
Jason Meyers is second in points and was second to Kinser for most of Tuesday's feature before Schatz passed him on the 35th lap. Meyers, who won the Outlaws feature at Lernerville in May, finished third.
"We had a good car tonight, but I misread the track a little bit,"Meyers said. "I had a couple of runs at (Kinser)."
His best shot at Kinser was coming off turn 3 on the 27th lap. Meyers temporarily jumped in front of the No. 11 car, but Kinser deftly shot off the high groove on turn 4 a second later and slid down in front of Meyers.
"I wasn't surprised to see him pull alongside of me,"Kinser said. "I was getting no bite out of turns 1 and 2 and was a little surprised he didn't get me on the back straightaway, but I guess everyone was having the same problem I was having on that part of the track."
The drivers said the track was extremely slick and getting traction in turns 1 and 2 was difficult.
Even through turns 3 and 4, Meyers wasn't surprised his attempted pass on Lap 27 didn't work.
"I didn't think it would hold, but I had to try something," he said. "We weren't getting into lapped traffic and I couldn't just stay behind him."
The race's first caution didn't occur until the 18th lap. Kinser came up on lapped cars by the eighth lap and cooly maneuvered through them, widening his lead over Meyers and Dollansky in the process.
Subsequent cautions on laps 22, 27, 29 and 33 took away any chance of lapped cars becoming a factor.
"We needed somebody to get in his way,"Schatz said. "Those cautions didn't help us."
Kinser said he was "terrible" for the first two or three laps after the cautions.
"Until my tires heated up, I had nothing,"he said.
That just frustrated Meyers all the more.
"When you get that close and don't get it done, it's disheartening,"Meyers said. "I just read things wrong."
Kinser's win was only his third of the season on the Outlaws tour. The victory marked his 17th career triumph at Lernerville.
Kinser's only previous Silver Cup win was in 1994. At this stage of his career, the 20-time Outlawspoints champion takes nothing for granted.
"With the group of cars we have, I can win this race tonight, go to Williams Grove and have trouble making the feature," he said. "That's how tough this series is right now."
The Outlaws compete in the two-day Williams Grove Summer Nationals this weekend.
Ed Lynch Jr. of Apollo was the highest finishing local driver, taking 16th. Like Lynch, Kittanning's Kevin Schaeffer qualified for the feature through the heat races and finished 27th. Rob Eyler of Franklin won the B-Main, but finished last in the feature.
