CARLISLE — A Pennsylvania man made an impression on the judge when he walked 25 miles to a court hearing earlier this summer, but he still faces a 30-day prison sentence.
Stephen Shoemaker of Shippensburg got his sentencing deferred when he walked much of the day in 90-plus degree heat and arrived hours late for a June 10 sentencing hearing. He appeared before Cumberland County Judge Edward Guido again on Tuesday.
Guido congratulated the 33-year-old Shoemaker on finding a ride to court this time. He says he has no legal leeway in sentencing Shoemaker to a mandatory 30 days for a drunken-driving conviction.
But Shoemaker does get a break. Guido granted his request to turn himself in July 25 rather than surrender immediately. Deputy Public Defender Anthony Adams says Guido told Shoemaker he trusts him not to drink and drive in the meantime.
