HERSHEY — Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock earned first place in the 13-and-under age division at the Pennsylvania Golf Association Championship, held Monday and Tuesday at Hershey Country Club.

Rinker shot a 77-75-152 in the event, which featured golfers from all across the state.

Legion baseball sets playoff games

East Butler, the top seed in the Butler County American Legion Baseball League playoffs, hosts No. 8 seed Meridian when the event gets under way Thursday.

In other games Thursday, No. 2 Prospect hosts No. 7 Center Township, No. 3 Butler City hosts No. 6 Cranberry Township at Pullman Park and No. 4 Mars hosts No. 5 Zelienople.

All games start at 6 p.m.

Cranberry Black, the Cranberry Township girls 10-under fast-pitch team, defeated Indiana, Ingomar, Freeport, Hampton and West View/Ross to win the 28-team Greater Pittsburgh Girls Softball League Tournament recently.The squad recorded a 1-0, extra-innings victory to win the title.Team members are Ashley Muir, Kelsi Cruttenden, Shannon McCabe, Riley Morrone, Mandy Spangler, Taylor McDermott, Maddie Beck, Alayna Derzak, Mary Mazur and Hannah Smelscer.

FOX CHAPEL — Nathan Smith, a member at St. Jude Golf Club, fired a 70 — his third consecutive total in as many rounds — and was tied for third place heading into Wednesday's fourth and final round at the Frank Fuhrer Jr. Invitational at Pittsburgh Field Club.Robert Friend of Pikewood National Golf Club still leads the invitational with a three-round total of 206. PGAprofessional Roy Vucinich is second at 208, while Robert Rohanna, an amateur like Smith, carded a three-round best of 66 to tie Smith.Sean Knapp, an amateur who is a member at St. Jude, is tied for fifth (213), Rob McClellan of Butler Country Club is tied for seventh (214), John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred is tied for ninth (215).Gene Walter, a professional fromSaxonburg, is tied for 14th (216) while Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf and Country Club is tied for 28th (223) and Travis Dickson, also of Treesdale is 32nd (224).

WASHINGTON — James Riemer, 56, of Butler will be among 19 disabled veterans from Pennsylvania who will compete in the 28th National Veterans Wheelchair Games, which will be held from July 25 to 29 in Omaha, Neb.Rory Cooper, 48, of Gibsonia also will travel to Omaha, where veterans will compete in track and field, swimming, basketball, weightlifting, softball, air guns, quad rugby, bowling, table tennis, archery, handcycling, a motorized wheelchair rally, wheelchair slalom, trapshooting, nine-ball and power soccer.
