The Butler County Historical Society is seeking donated artifacts and documented information relating to the county's steel heritage.

Items would be displayed at the Butler County Heritage Center in celebration of the 100th anniversary of steel production in Butler County at the site of the current AK Steel.

Items may include safety awards, suggestion awards and suggestion boxes from the plant; Forged Steel Wheel Company, Columbia Steel Company and AK Steel items; clothing worn by the mill workers; artifacts related to the employees; Armco Park and Golf Club items; and wartime artifacts relating to the company.

Information on the men and women who were employed at the steel companies and preserved the artifacts is also encouraged.

Items for the exhibit must be donated by July 18. For more information, call 724-283-8116 on weekdays.

The Butler County Historical Society is reprinting the book "Merrie Olde Middlesex" by Caroljo Forsythe Lee. The history of everyday life in Middlesex Township has been out of print and unavailable for more than 30 years.It includes tidbits from American history, including the original minutes of an 1825 adultery trial in one of Western Pennsylvania's oldest churches. The book also features personal items such as albums, scrapbooks and courthouse records.The expected release date is Sept. 30. Presale price for is $45 on orders placed by Aug. 15. The Lifesteps' Child Check team will conduct free screenings July 11 at the Community Health Clinic, 103 Bonnie Drive, East Butler Road, and July 23 at the Early Education Center at Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center.The screenings are for children birth to age 5.The 30-minute evaluations will address development in areas including playing, talking, hearing, moving and thinking.Appointments are recommended but not required.
