Striking out for regionals

Girls soccer team reliving last season's success

Members of the Pittsburgh Strikers U-13 girls soccer team are used to winning — and dominating.

The team, which includes seven girls from the Seneca Valley, Mars and Slippery Rock school districts, is headed to the U.S. Club Soccer Regionals in Indianapolis Saturday through July 2.

So far, the team has compiled a record of 19-2-4 while outscoring their opponents 54-7 in the process.

The squad last saw action in the West Penn State Cup Tournament June 14-15 in Erie.

A perfect 4-0 record at the event earned the Strikers the championship, just two weeks after they won the Pennsylvania Premier Alliance West League championship.

Sixteen of the 17 players on this year's team played on the Strikers' U-12 team in 2007 that won the PPA West title, the West Penn State Cup, the regional championship and earned a berth in the national championship tournament in North Carolina.

"I know the talent and desire that the girls have," said Strikers coach Greg Helsel. "And I knew those things would make it possible for us to repeat. But does that mean that you're going to get every little bounce to go your way? No."

Because of superb team play, the Strikers have been able to duplicate 2007, at least to this point.

"Defensively, we've got a very solid back line and have received great play in goal," said Helsel. "One thing that gets overlooked is the midfielders' play. They've been so dominating and have accounted for about 50 percent of our goals.

"Offensively, we are a very balanced team."

If the Strikers can win at regionals, which would include five wins over very strong competition, they would again reach the national tournament, which will be held in Virginia Beach in late July.

The U-12 team went 0-2-1 at nationals last year.

First things first, however.

The team that defeated the Strikers in the first round of nationals last year, Ohio Premier, will also be competing in regionals at Indianapolis.

"We played them during the season last year and beat them," said Helsel. "And then they beat us at nationals.

"We could meet them in either the (regional) semifinals or finals this time."

But whatever happens, the Pittsburgh Strikers already have turned in another incredible season.

"It's exciting to watch them," Helsel said. "You never know what they're going to be able to do next."

Butler County players include SV's Misha Demchuk, Morgan Williams, Alex Bilka, Amy Kolor, Melissa Lynskey, Mars' Bethany Perri and Slippery Rock's Amber Fichter.
