Concert benefits boy's memorial fund
EASTB RADY — The last date of the GA to PA Tour will be July 4 at the East Brady Community Center.
The tour raises money for the Nicholas G. Dunlap Memorial Fund. The scholarship fund was established in memory of Chicora resident Nicholas Dunlap, who died in 2004 at age 13 after battling brain tumors.
Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and tickets are $7. Donations also will be accepted.
"Everything that comes through the door and the money from food sales will go toward the Nick Dunlap Memorial Fund,"said Jared Overly, concert organizer and East Brady native.
The show is headlined by a band called Seven Miles Walking, described by Overly as a "power pop Christian band."
"They've really got some notoriety on a nationwide scale," said Overly, who manages the group. "They've been coast to coast and played with bigger bands."
Other bands on the lineup include Uppers Downers Screamers Laughers, Common Ground, Annasay, and the Victory Year.
The tour has stopped in Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C., and in other sites in Pennsylvania and played in venues ranging from bars to youth centers.
The music is appropriate for audience members of all ages, Overly said.
"All the bands have very clean shows," he said. "It's fun, too. It's good music."
This is the first GA to PA tour, but not the first benefit concert for the Nicholas G. Dunlap Memorial Fund. Overly arranged the first event in 2002, without knowing Dunlap personally.
Overly saw a donation can for Nick at a convenience store and said he felt a deep concern for the Dunlaps. He was moved enough to arrange a benefit concert, with proceeds helping to cover Nick's medical costs and other expenses. It attracted such a large turnout that he organized several more.
The events encouraged Overly, a 2006 graduate of Karns City High School, to break into the music business.
"It goes to show how one child can change another's path, another person's future," said Nick's mother, Linda Dunlap. "Nick inspired many."
Overly said he organizes the shows because Nick was an inspiration to him.
"He taught me something about compassion and doing something nice for someone — someone you may not even know," he said. "I think that these Nick Dunlap Memorial shows not only contribute to a good cause but also celebrate the life of a truly special boy."
The Dunlaps are extremely happy and honored by Overly's efforts, Lisa Dunlap said.
"We hope the turnout will be great, not only for the support of the scholarship fund," she said. "But also for the groups and Jared, for the hard work and time they put into this concert and every concert they do to help others."
