Almost double trouble

Dave Murdick, left, and Brian Swartzlander fight for position in the Modified feature on Friday night at Lernerville. Swartzlander won the feature and also finished second in the Late Model race at the Sarver track.
Swartzlander gets 1st, 2nd in feature races at Lernerville

BUFFALO TWP— Brian Swartzlander had been a double-winner before, but not this way.

"I wanted to win this race so bad," he muttered to crew members as he climbed out of the No. 111DLate Model car normally driven by Jim Detman of Leechburg.

But he didn't.

Swartzlander finished second to Jared Miley of South Park in the Late Model feature Friday night at Lernerville Speedway. He went on to win the Modified feature later in the evening.

The veteran driver of the No. 83 Modified won his fourth feature in that division at Lernerville this season and the 58th of his career at the Sarver track. He pulled within three wins of Blackie Watt for third on Lernerville's all-time Modified list.

Swartzlander has never won a Late Model feature.

"I actually broke into racing in the Late Model division back in the 1980s, but the cars were nothing like they are today,"he said.

Swartzlander and Detman have been friends for years.

"He'd been having some trouble with the car and asked me to drive it tonight and maybe get a feel for what's going on,"Swartzlander said. "It was fun out there. I didn't think I'd be in a position to win the race.

"When I was ... I really wanted it."

Swartzlander started the Late Model feature on the pole and led for the first 14 laps. The 22-year-old Miley started up front as well and took the lead between turns 1 and 2 on the 15th lap.

On a 19th lap restart, Swartzlander nearly retook the lead on the back straightaway — forcing Miley off the top of the track briefly — but the South Park driver held on, kept the line and kept the lead.

"He didn't do anything wrong there,"Miley said of the restart. "Brian was trying to slide up and take the line, but I wasn't gonna give it up.

"That was close, but I managed to keep the car moving forward."

Miley's win was his second at Lernerville this season and his third overall at the Sarver track. He also owns two feature wins at the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.

"It's going good for us so far,"Miley said. "What saved me tonight was finding a line between turns 1 and 2. That's where I got the bite and gained enough ground to win."

While just missing his first Late Model win, Swartzlander grabbed the checkered flag in the Modified feature. Jeremiah Shingledecker was bidding for his second win in three weeks in the No. 37 car, but broke coming off Turn 2 on the 13th lap while in the lead.

Shingledecker had to pit and never returned.

Swartzlander started from the seventh spot and took over the lead at that point. Pole-sitter Dave Murdick gave him a run for his money, particularly on a 21st lap restart.

Murdick pulled alongside Swartzlander heading into turn 3, but had to battle to maintain his line as the No. 83 car bumped up high.

"I might have had the lead there until he (Swartzlander) nearly took me off the track,"Murdick said. "He knew I was there ... He came up pretty high.

"If I had gotten the lead, he wouldn't have passed me, I can tell you that."

Swartzlander said he didn't see Murdick and was just sliding up into the groove.

"I was surprised when I slid up and he was there,"he said. "I wasn't expecting that."

Slippery Rock's Murdick settled for second place in the race.

"I'll take that with the kind of season we've been having,"Murdick said. "We've broken an axle, our battery went out one night ... just a lot of bad luck. This sport will kick you when you're down."

During the late 1990s, Swartzlander won a small-block and big-block Modified race on the same night at Knox. He won two triple-25 Modified races on the same night at Mercer.

"But I've never won in two different divisions like this would have been,"he said. "In that Late Model race, I was nervous starting up front. There's some heavy hitters out there and I didn't want to make a fool out of myself and get run over or something."

In other features:

n Kevin Schaeffer of Kittanning started 10th, yet rallied to win the Sprint feature. He took the lead from Franklin's Rob Eyler on the 18th lap.

The 2007 track champion won his first feature of the season.

"I was just lost all year ... I was advised to go back to our basic set-up. Don't change anything,"Schaeffer said. "It worked for us tonight."

• Jason Fosnaught of Creighton had a Street Stock feature win taken away two weeks ago because of an illegal part. He snared his first "official"win Friday night, taking the lead from Mike Pegher on the 11th lap and not relinquishing it.

"I want to win four more of these," a jubilant Fosnaught said. "That's how fired up I am.

"We had a discrepancy in the rules. We thouight we had a win. We didn't. It's no big deal. But this car is legal. I just want everybody to know."

Notes:There were 101 cars in the pits. ... The lone red light of the night occurred late in the Street Stock feature when Ford City's Stan Riggle sailed off Turn 3 and slammed into the fence in front of the pits. He climbed out of the car and was to be evaluated later. ... Bob Felmlee won his fifth heat race this year in the Sprints, most heat wins in any division at Lernerville this season.
