Lynch earns 90th career Sprint win at track

BUFFALO TWP— Ed Lynch Jr. and Pat Hanley began and ended Lernerville Speedway's racing show with runaway victories Friday night.

Otherwise, their feature wins could not have been more different.

Lynch recorded his 90th career Sprint feature win at the Sarver track, taking the lead on the second lap and building a half-track lead by the 18th lap. The race had no restarts after the fifth lap.

"I would have loved to have seen at least one caution somewhere in there to see how I stacked up with (Lynch)," said third-place finisher Charlie Holben of Cabot.

"We've been having all kinds of bad luck with lapped cars. ... Something bad seemed to happen every week and it just kept accelerating. Maybe this is the start of something for us. We should be a top-five car every week."

Lynch feels his pain.

The Apollo Rocket became the first two-time Sprint feature winner at Lernerville this season. His first win came on opening night, however.

Since then, it's been a story of flips and breakdowns for the No. 2L.

"You have to run through the good-luck, bad-luck stuff and keep going,"Lynch said. "We made a lot of changes after the heat race and everything worked out for the best."

Among those changes were new shocks, new tires and a wing adjustment.

"I'm pretty pleased with what we did,"Lynch said. "I don't think any additional restarts would have bothered me. This car felt good out there."

While Lynch has been to victory lane more often than any Sprint driver in Lernerville history, Hanley secured the first feature win of his career — and still couldn't get there.

The driver of the No. 380 Pure Stock was in fifth place during an 11th-lap restart, yet vaulted into the lead before that lap was completed.

He built on his lead from there, easily beating runner-up Bob Egley and the rest of the field to the checkered flag.

Just as the race ended, heavy rain pelted the track and Hanley, who's been racing here since 2001, had to celebrate his first victory under the grandstand in Lernerville's alternate victory lane.

"It doesn't bother me,"a jubilant Hanley said as he posed for pictures.

"How was the track?,"he repeated a question. "Beautiful. Keep it that way."

In other features:

n Greg Satterlee of Rochester Mills recorded his first Late Model win of the season and his second career Lernerville triumph by holding off Franklin's Matt Lux for the checkered.

Lux was right on Satterlee's rear bumper for the final six laps and had a chance to overtake him on a 25th-lap restart, but could not.

n The Modified race was the longest of the night. Del Rougeux Jr. of Frenchville held off Kevin Bolland and Brian Swatrtzlander, who have combined to win five features here this season, for the win.

The race had nine restarts. Rougeux was the lead car for eight of them after moving in front during a Lap 2 restart.

"All I wanted to do was keep the car straight,"Rougeux said. "It was good enough to win."

Notes: There were 87 cars in the pits. ... Two veteran drivers, Dave Murdick of Slippery Rock in the Modifieds and Ralph Spithaler of Evans City in the Sprints, picked up their first heat race wins of the year. ... The Pure Stock feature became a 20-lap event Friday and will stay that way the rest of the season. It had been a 15-lap race for years.
