NASCAR drivers take on area guys
A NASCAR Sprint Cup trio will trade in their windshields for tearoffs as they return to their open-wheel roots Tuesday at Sharon Speedway.
Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, and Dave Blaney will race against some of the top area Sprint drivers for the $6,000 prize when the track hosts the first round of a three-part Ollies 360 Challenge series
The second race is at Eldora July 8, and the third is at Williams Grove Aug. 19.
Additionally, a $50,000 bonus will be given to anyone who wins two of the three events.
In other racing news:
• Donny Schatz had two victories and a second-place finish last weekend. This extended his lead in the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship standings to 37 markers over Jason Meyers. Schatz, the two-time defending series champion, is the only driver who has finished in the Top-10 in all 17 events this season.
• Mike Lutz and owner Jim Chappel recently celebrated their first 2008 Sprint victory at Lernerville Speedway.
• Scott Bloomquist pocketed $100,000 for winning the 14th annual Dirt Late Model Dream at Eldora Speedway. This was a record fifth Dream victory trophy that Bloomquist was awarded. It was reported that Bloomquist will be at Lernerville to defend his title in the Outlaws Late Model Firecracker 100 June 25 and 26.
• Tony Stewart won his own 30-lap dirt track Prelude to the Dream Charity event at Eldora Speedway last week and donated $1 million to Victory Junction. Stewart was among the 25 NASCAR drivers who competed in the contest.
• PPC Violence-Free Network returns to Tri-City Speedway on Sunday with the seventh annual ladies charity event, which is a ladies-only, midsize car demolition derby. Registrations being accepted by Tri-City Speedway. The entry fee is $25, and the event pays $300 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place. The event benefits PPC Network, which provides confidential services to victims of domestic and sexual violence and other violent crimes.
• Dan and Heather Osmer had a baby boy last Friday. The new race fan, Dash Osmer, weighed 8.7 pounds and was 20-inches long.
• The first Super Late Models extravaganza will be highlighted at Roaring Knob Saturday. The 35-lap event pays $2,500 to the winner. The five- division program starts promptly at 7 p.m.
• Congratulations to Butch Lambert, who scored his first FASTRAK Crate Late Model heat victory at Tri-City Speedway. With four laps to go in the feature, Lambert was reeling in leader Robbie Blair when heavy winds and rain hit the speedway. The race was called official, giving the win to Blair, and Lambert earned a career- and season-best second-place finish.
