Flavion leaves mark at SV

Seneca Valley's Lindsay Flavion celebrates after scoring what would be her final goal for the Raiders in last month's loss in the WPIAL semifinals. Flavion ended her career as SV's all-time leading goal scorer with 114.

JACKSON TWP — Lindsay Flavion remembers Erin Bernhard as a great player.

The former's statistics prove that Flavion isn't too bad, either.

An attacker who just finished her senior season for the Seneca Valley girls lacrosse team, Flavion ended her high school career as the Raiders' all-time leading scorer with 114 goals.

Bernhard, who graduated in 2006, held the previous mark at 111.

The two players were SV teammates during Flavion's sophomore season.

"I assisted on her 100th goal," Flavion said. "That was pretty neat."

Flavion also broke Bernhard's team record for regular-season goals, scoring 57 times in 2008. Bernhard's best total was 56.

During a WPIAL quarterfinal win against Quaker Valley last month, Flavion tied Bernhard's career total.

Then, in a semifinal loss to Mount Lebanon, Flavion scored three goals to give her the top spot.

The numbers earned her WPIAL Section 1 first-team honors and a second-team spot on the all-league squad.

Many of Flavion's goals came at crucial points in games.

"When we were in close games, we counted on her to pull us through," said Raiders coach Dina Hughes.

"She created opportunities for the other girls, too," the coach added. "She understands game strategy, and, even if she wasn't taking the shot, she would set things up for the other players."

Flavion, a Cranberry Township resident, began playing lacrosse during her seventh-grade year.

But when shoulder surgery kept Flavion from playing her freshman season, team records seemed out of the question.

"I had a torn labrum in my right shoulder," said Flavion. "I came back my sophomore season and played, but did not start.

"It's awesome to graduate with the records," she added. "I love lacrosse and I worked really hard to get back."

Hughes, who just concluded her first year as SV's coach, recognized Flavion's talent immediately.

"I knew from the moment I saw her that she was a huge asset to the team," Hughes said. "She has excellent intuition and her drive to the goal is unbelievable."

Though her high school playing days are behind her, Flavion isn't ready to put her lacrosse stick down. She recently decided to play at Division III Washington and Jefferson College.

"(Coach Kate Scattergood) said she'd like to use me at midfield," she added. "I'd like to stay at (attack), but I'll play wherever they need me. She hinted that I could see a lot of playing time my freshman year."

Scattergood led the Presidents to a 3-8 record this spring in the inaugural season for women's lacrosse at W&J.

Flavion will focus her studies on pre-med.
