PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh City Council has tentatively approved a plan to create a domestic registry for people living together in a committed relationship.
The measure was proposed by Councilman Bruce Kraus, who says it is meant to treat people who live together and are financially dependent on one another the same as married couples. That would include heterosexual or homosexual couples in committed relationships. Couples would pay $25 to be registered.
Registered city employees could share their fringe benefits with partners. The registry could also be used by employers in deciding whether to offer domestic partner benefits to such people.
Noncity residents would not be allowed to register. A final vote is scheduled for Tuesday.
