10K races are blasts from the past
With a choice of 10K races, it's a retro weekend for runners.
When I began running decades ago, 10K was the standard distance. Then, runners and race organizers found that shortening the distance to 5K made road racing accessible to more people and with less work involved in staging the event. After a while, runners didn't train for 10K's anymore because there just weren't any to run.
Two area races have made the commitment to stage quality 10K events with shorter events.
At 8:30 a.m. Saturday, the 12th annual Greater Clarksburg 10K takes to the streets of that West Virginia town. There will be a party and awards ceremony downtown after the race.
With West Virginia's reputation for hills, the Greater Clarksburg 10K can't be easy. The course follows a rolling double loop that begins and ends on Main Street. The course is USATF certified and runners will be ChampionChip timed for accuracy.
There also will be a 2-mile run-walk at 10 a.m. followed by the KidsK Fun Run at 10:30.
For information on Saturday's Greater Clarksburg 10K, call 304-624-4100 or visit www.greaterclarksburg10k.org.
Sunday's 10K is closer to home, as the sixth annual Father's Day 5K-10K Run-Walk will be held in Pittsburgh's Riverfront Park. The 10K starts at 8 a.m. along the Allegheny River in front of Heinz Field. The 5K start follows at 8:15 and a fun run begins at 9.
All of the morning's events follow a level out-and-back course along the Allegheny River. The 10K includes a loop of Washington's Landing.
The event calls attention to the serious disease of prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in the United States.
Proceeds from Sunday's event will be used by the Obediah Cole Foundation for Prostate Cancer to support education, awareness and early detection in Western Pennsylvania.
Race-day registration opens at 6:45 a.m. in Riverfront Park. For information, visit www.fathersday5k.com
