Port Authority sees ridership dip
PITTSBURGH — The Port Authority of Allegheny County is losing riders, though not as many as projected, on its buses and light-rail trains.
A report by the American Public Transportation Association says the transit agency lost 5 percent of its riders in the first three months of this year, despite rising gasoline prices. Meanwhile, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority based in Philadelphia saw ridership increase 6 percent. Smaller transit agencies in neighboring Beaver and Westmoreland counties have also seen ridership gains.
A Port Authority spokeswoman said a January fare increase and a 15 percent reduction in routes caused the agency to project ridership to drop 8 percent.
