EC man records double eagle
EVANSCITY — There is nothing special about Frank Bilski's golf game.
The Evans City resident carries a 10-handicap. He never played in any tournament until Wednesday. A hole-in-one has never come his way, either.
Nothing out of the ordinary had ever happened to Bilski on a golf course — until last Monday, when he notched a double eagle on the par-5 No. 12 hole at Hartmann's Deep Valley Golf Course.
"I don't remember us ever having a double eagle here," said course co-owner Linda Hartmann. "If we have, it's been a number of years."
Bilski, 41, lives right up the road from Hartmann's and plays there about three times a week. He often plays alone, getting in nine holes during the early evening hours after working as a union carpenter.
He began Monday's round playing alone.
"I wasn't going to play at all that night,"Bilski said. "The Penguins were playing and I didn't want to miss the game. But I figured I had enough time to squeeze in a round — and I'm glad I did."
Bilski played the back nine at Hartmann's Monday evening. He teed off on No. 10 by himself, then happened upon a couple — Joe and Tina Maze of Cranberry Township — whom he's golfed with before.
"They were golfing with a friend of theirs (Scott Denne of Cranberry Township) and asked me to join them,"Bilski said. "I'm grateful for that. Without them, I have no witnesses."
The No. 12 hole at Hartmann's is 467 yards. Bilski's tee shot carried over a lake, caromed off the cart path on the other side and came to rest in the rough, just off the fairway of hole No. 11.
Bilski said a drive has to carry 280 yards to clear the lake on No. 12.
"I was swinging the club well that day and decided to go for it,"he said. "I've cleared that lake on drives before."
Bilski estimated his second shot was 140 yards from the green.
"It was a straight shot," he said. "I pulled out my 8-iron. If I hit it right, I knew I could get the ball on the green.
"The ball felt good coming off the club. I saw the ball rolling on the green and figured it rolled past the flag. I turned to put my club away, figuring I had a shot at an eagle putt."
Not so.
"Joe and Tina were standing in the fairway and yelled, 'It went in!It went in!' All I kept thinking was they better not be messing with me," Bilski said.
He added that he has eagled the No. 12 hole, but he never came close to a double eagle before.
"Let's face it. A double eagle is luck. I know that — but I'm still excited about it two days later," he said. "I can't wait to tell my brothers."
Bilski recently closed on a home in South Park and will be moving there. He is originally from the South Hills and has rejoined his golf league in Elizabeth.
"There are 40 really good golfers in that league and only one of them has ever had a double eagle,"he said. "Counting myself, I only know three people who have ever gotten one.
"I grew up around Hartmann's golf course. My dad and uncle used to sneak my cousin and I on this course when I was 5. I could hit a 3-iron up the fairway, but I was never allowed to putt on the green."
He didn't need the putter on Monday, either.
