Hyperion, a heavy metal band fronted by a recent Seneca Valley High School graduate, was recently voted best band in Pittsburgh as part of a Emergenza worldwide battle of the bands contest.
The band will now perform in the U.S. regional competition this Saturday in Detroit.
Classifying themselves as melodic thrash metal, Hyperion is made up of lead singer Rick Sheets, a Cranberry Township resident and 2007 Seneca graduate; and the other members from the Shaler and Squirrel Hill areas: guitar players Chuck Forsythe and Joe Tappe; drummer Will Morril, and bass player Greg Defazio.
On May 24 at Mr. Small's Theatre in Millvale, Hyperion was voted the best band in Pittsburgh for the Emergenza worldwide battle of the bands.
Forsythe also was named the best guitarist of the night.
Emergenza was created 15 years ago in Europe to promote battle of bands. It is now a worldwide promoter of bands.
Because of this band honor, Hyperion gets an all-expense paid trip to Detroit for the regional competition.
Events leading to the regional finals have been held throughout the United States including Boston, Chicago, Buffalo and Washington, D.C."It's been real exciting so far," said Sheets, who said all of the band members are under the age of 20. "We're really looking forward to playing in Detroit."The band recruited Sheets about five months ago to sing.If it wins in Detroit, the band would go to the U.S. national finals in Chicago.
