Penn Hills cuts 34 teachers, supt. resigns

PENN HILLS — The superintendent of the Penn Hills School District is stepping down as the school board lays off 34 teachers and two principals in hopes of saving $5 million.

Board President Erin Vecchio cast the only vote against the layoffs in that major Pittsburgh suburb. She says only 20 teachers should be let go.

Some of the laid-off teachers could be recalled once the district determines how many will be needed to staff four reconfigured elementary schools.

The board also accepted the resignation of superintendent Patricia Gennari.

The Penn Hills district has closed two elementary schools and consolidated others to end years of budget deficits.
