PITTSBURGH — Officials said someone held up the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, possibly at gunpoint, on Sunday evening after the gates closed.
The zoo's chief operating officer, Frank Cartieri, said an employee was robbed of the day's receipts shortly after 5 p.m. as the worker was leaving the admissions booth.
The zoo's gates closed at 4:30 p.m.
Cartieri said the employee said the robber held what appeared to be a small, dark gray-colored item. Cartieri said authorities don't know if the item was a gun.
He said neither the employee nor any visitors were hurt.
He said police are talking with the worker and others.
The zoo opened as scheduled at 9 a.m. Monday.
PITTSBURGH — State police fire marshals are waiting for laboratory results before they determine the cause of a Jefferson County house fire that killed 10 people.Police spokesman Bruce Morris said it's unknown how long it will take for results to be made available to the fire marshals investigating the April 3 blaze in Brockway.Investigators said the fire, which began in the living room, isn't suspicious. Space heaters were being used, and gas service had been shut off in 2005.Nine victims were from one family and most were children.
HICKORY — State police said a 17-year-old Lawrence County boy is accused of lacing muffins with an ingredient that sickened a high school teacher.Police said the student at Laurel High School in Hickory was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. His name was not released because he is a juvenile.Police said the teen was in the teacher's classroom Thursday morning and offered her a muffin.Police said after the teacher ate it, she felt woozy, disoriented and ill. She was taken to a hospital and has since returned to her job.Authorities said they don't know what was in the muffin. The wrapper is being analyzed at a crime lab.
LANCASTER — Police in Lancaster County said a case of road rage led a man to throw a knife into another car, where it narrowly missed the driver and lodged in the dashboard.Manheim Township investigators said 22-year-old Sean Kemberling of Lancaster admitted throwing the folding knife with a 3.5-inch blade.The incident occurred Saturday when a 53-year-old Lancaster man merged in front of the car in which Kemberling was a passenger.Police said Kemberling thought his car had been cut off and threw the knife through the victim's open window.Police traced the suspect car's license plate and found Kemberling at the owner's home.He is being held in the county prison on aggravated assault and other charges.
