New chancellor of state universities meets presidents, trustees, faculty

John Cavanaugh was named the next chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

The incoming chancellor of Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities is getting a formal introduction in Harrisburg.

Slippery Rock University is among the state-owned schools.

University of West Florida president John Cavanaugh got acquainted with university presidents, trustees and faculty Thursday at the State System of Higher Education's headquarters.

Cavanaugh says he's a strong advocate of public higher education and that state universities can play an important role in the economic development of their local communities.

Cavanaugh will take over as state system chancellor July 1 and will earn a salary of $327,500.

He'll replace current Chancellor Judy Hample.

The 14 state universities are Kutztown, Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester.
