Eatery serves $100 cheesesteak
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia, the home of the cheesesteak, is also home to one of the most expensive cheesesteaks.
Chef James Locascio (loh-KAS'-ee-oh) of Barclay Prime in Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square serves an upscale version of the sandwich that includes butter poached lobster and shaved truffles.
That kind of lavishness doesn't come cheap. The average cheesesteak in town runs about $6 to $7. This one costs $100.
Locascio said he pays $17 per pound for the cheese, $21 per pound for Kobe beef and $900 per pound for summer truffles.
The restaurant has been serving a version of the $100 cheesesteak since it opened in 2004. At the time, owner Stephen Starr acknowledged the costly sandwich is a marketing ploy for his upscale steakhouse.
