HERSHEY— A Butler High School senior placed first in first aid and CPR at the state SkillsUSA competition at the Hershey Conference Center April 2 to 4.

Shawn Smith took honors at the competition for vocational-technical schools after first qualifying at a regional competition in Erie earlier this year.

These Butler County Vocational-Technical students also earned honors at the competition:

• Silver medalists: Valerie Heitzer, senior at Butler, food and beverage; and Justin Ellenberger, senior at Moniteau, sheet metal.

• Bronze medalist: Emily Amerson, senior at Butler, advertising design.

• Honorable mention: Joe Acquavita, junior at Karns City, automated manufacturing; Ben Pyle, junior at Karns City, automated manufacturing; Aaron Davis, senior at Karns City, HVAC; Nathan DeFelice, senior at Butler, carpentry; Matt McCormick, senior at Butler, automated manufacturing; Andrew Hill, senior at Butler, firefighting; Bryan Flecken, senior at Butler, computer maintenance; Jeremy Taylor, senior at Butler, photographer/door sign; Carrie Lawson, senior at Butler, bulletin board; Lindsey Marburger, junior at Moniteau, bulletin board; Ashley Kreutz, senior at Slippery Rock, health occupations delegate.

The national SkillsUSAcompetition is June 24 to 27 in Kansas City.
