Cruelty charges refiled against sanctuary owner
GIBSONIA — Animal cruelty charges were refiled Tuesday against a woman who runs a cat sanctuary where authorities found hundreds of sick and dying cats in a raid last month.
The charges — 203 misdemeanor counts and 371 summary counts — involve both dead and living cats, as well as several other animals, found at Linda Bruno's Tiger Ranch.
Bruno, 45, of Tarentum, pleaded not guilty after a brief arraignment Tuesday and said she cared for cats that no one else wanted.
"Those are God's creatures," she said. "I am only the steward of them."
Charges were dismissed last week after a district judge ruled prosecutors failed to provide detailed evidence. Bruno's attorney, Ron Valasek, had said that what prosecutors initially filed did not provide enough information for him to be able to mount a defense. Allegheny County prosecutors responded with a 218-page complaint outlining the alleged abuse in which cats were referred to by letter and number.
"The essence of each charge is that the defendant recklessly and willfully deprived and/or denied the animals of either basic needs and/or veterinary care, causing inhumane and torturous conditions leading to severe discomfort and/or death," the complaint said of the 203 misdemeanor charges. One cat was found dead in a litter box "that contained more feces than litter," the document said.
The charges followed a raid in which the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals accused Bruno of failing to provide adequate care.
