Baby sitter is recharged with manslaughter
ERIE — Involuntary manslaughter charges have been refiled against a baby sitter in the drowning deaths of two toddlers.
An Erie County judge also granted the district attorney's request for a new district judge to rehear the charges.
District Judge James Dwyer last month dismissed involuntary manslaughter charges, saying there wasn't enough evidence 20-year-old Brittany Steward acted with gross negligence.
Dwyer ordered Steward to stand trial on reckless endangerment and child endangerment in the deaths of 20-month-old Jenna Walker, and 2-year-old Maggie Kovski.
The toddlers wandered from a Waterford Township house and drowned in a backyard pond in May.
Police say Steward slept after a night of drinking and knew she had to watch the children.
