Rays get revenge on Yankees in rout

The Tampa Bay Rays waited for the regular season to get their revenge on the New York Yankees.

Carlos Pena hit a three-run homer off reliever LaTroy Hawkins in a seven-run eighth and the Rays trounced New York 13-4 Friday night in the first regular-season meeting between the Yankees and Rays since they fought and exchanged nasty words during spring training.

The Yankees played without center fielder Melky Cabrera and the Rays were without Jonny Gomes. Each dropped their appeals of suspensions — which were reduced by a game each — for their roles in the bench-clearing scrap on March 12. Cabrera is out for two games and Gomes for one.

Yankees reserve Shelley Duncan also dropped his appeal and will sit out two games — reduced from three — starting Sunday. He instigated the fight by making a spikes-high hard slide into Rays second baseman Akinori Iwamura. Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon called the play "borderline criminal."

At Detroit, A.J. Pierzynski drove in five runs with three hits, including a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the seventh inning that led Chicago to victory.Detroit, the only winless team in the major leagues, is 0-4 for the first time since the Tigers dropped their first nine games in 2003 en route to an AL-record 119 losses. Not exactly the start hoped for by team with the second-highest payroll in the majors behind the Yankees.

At Toronto, Frank Thomas doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, Shaun Marcum struck out eight and the Blue Jays improved to 24-8 in home openers before a sellout crowd of 50,171.

At Baltimore, Ramon Hernandez broke out of a hitless funk by going 3-for-4 with a home run, and the Orioles also got homers from Kevin Millar and Melvin Mora.

At Minneapolis, Carlos Gomez went 3-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases and Scott Baker recovered from a sluggish first two innings to hand Kansas City its first loss.

At Oakland, Calif., Justin Duchscherer allowed one run in five innings in his first start since 2003, helping the Athletics beat Cleveland before leaving the game with biceps tendinitis.

At Anaheim, Calif., Ben Broussard hit a grand slam, Kason Gabbard threw seven shutout innings and Texas spoiled Los Angeles' home opener.
