Wheeling-Pitt will close Pa. mill, idle some Ohio work
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. will shut down its mill in Allenport, Pa., and idle some operations in Martins Ferry, Ohio — moves the United Steelworkers said late Monday will affect about 360 workers.
Wheeling-Pitt, a subsidiary of Illinois-based Esmark, has hinted at layoffs as part of its restructuring since last fall. Members of the United Steelworkers were issued notice Monday under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.
Wheeling-Pitt's brief news release said it will idle two of the three galvanizing lines at its processing plant in Martins Ferry, Ohio. It did not provide a time line or any other details.
Wheeling-Pitt staggered through two bankruptcies and a string of financial losses before Esmark stepped in and seized control through a proxy fight in the fall of 2006.
Dave McCall, director of USW District 1 in Columbus, Ohio, said the layoffs affect about 240 workers in Allenport and 120 in Martins Ferry.
