PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates reacquired utilityman Matt Kata on Sunday in a minor league deal with the Colorado Rockies and signed right-hander Jason Davis to be a starting pitcher at Triple-A Indianapolis.
Colorado will receive future considerations for Kata, who hit .250 with one homer and 10 RBIs in 47 games with Pittsburgh last season after beginning the year with Texas. He was designated for assignment by the Pirates in October and claimed by the Rockies.
Davis is 20-22 over six major league seasons, mostly with the Indians. He was 2-0 with a 6.31 ERA in 16 games with Seattle last season after having a 4.76 ERA in eight games with Cleveland. He was in the Rangers' camp this spring but did not make the team.
Neither player was added to the Pirates' 40-man roster.
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla.— Lindsay Davenport, who left the women's tour in late 2006 to have her first child, upset second-ranked Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-2 in the third round at the Sony Ericsson Open.The three-time Grand Slam champion is 17-3 this year with two titles. She rated the win over Ivanovic as her best since returning to the tour last summer.Serena and Venus Williams also reached the fourth round, as did top-seeded Justine Henin. Four-time champion Serena Williams had the toughest time, overcoming 60 unforced errors and a 3-0 deficit in the second set to beat No. 27 Flavia Pennetta 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-2.On the men's side, No. 2 Rafael Nadal never faced a break point and beat Nicolas Kiefer 6-2, 6-4. No. 9 James Blake outlasted 35-year-old Fabrice Santoro, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4.
AVONDALE, La. — Argentina's Andres Romero won the Zurich Classic in his 12th career start on the PGA Tour, closing with a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over Australia's Peter Lonard.Romero, a shot behind John Merrick on Sunday morning after the completion of the third round, had a 13-under 275 total on the TPC Louisiana and earned $1,116,000.
SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN, Ariz. — Lorena Ochoa left her pursuers in the desert dust, defending her Safeway International title with a dominating seven-stroke victory.The 26-year-old sensation, with three big flags from her native Mexico waving in the crowd, shot a 6-under 66 to finish at 22-under 266. She won for the second time in three tries in the young LPGA Tour season.It was the lowest score, by four shots, in the five years the tournament has been held at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club.
