Lincoln autograph hits auction block

PHILADELPHIA — The only known autograph of Abraham Lincoln from the day of the Gettysburg Address is going on the auction block.

What's being offered next week at Sotheby's gallery in New York is a page from an autograph book signed at the cemetery dedication on the day Lincoln delivered the famous speech. The same gilt-edged page contains the signatures of three people seated with Lincoln. One is Secretary of State William Seward. The others are prominent Pennsylvanians: Lincoln's secretary of war, Simon Cameron, and Pennsylvania Gov. Andrew Curtin.

Sotheby's says the page is thought to be the only surviving item from Nov. 19, 1863, known to have been handled by Lincoln himself. It is among items from a private collection that will be on display at Sotheby's in New York.
