Mother charged with leaving her newborn in toilet

BETHLEHEM — A woman faces charges that she gave birth over a toilet and then refused to remove her newborn from the water.

Melissa Regalis, 27, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of reckless endangerment and endangering welfare of a child.

Police said Regalis gave birth to a boy Aug. 30. She then called 911, but police said she refused instruction to remove the baby from the water.

Police said the child's father found the infant sitting in an upright position in the toilet bowl, submerged to his chest. The baby was treated for hypothermia and an infection.
